Villager denies opposing perimeter surveys

MARUDI: Long Terawan villager Laing Laging, 60, has denied ever opposing perimeter surveys by the Land and Survey Department under the government’s New Native Customary Right (NCR) Land Initiative.

The farmer said he had no part in being listed as a member of a group opposing the survey of land belonging to the Tering-Berawan Community of Long Terawan and Sungai Melinau Mulu, Tutoh.

“I was very surprised and knew nothing when I found that my name was included in the letter, which the group sent to the Land and Survey enforcement officer in Miri Division dated 26th July, 2013 in which my name was listed as number 19 out of 26 opposed to it.

“I only knew about it from a copy of the letter which they cc to our headman Edmund Abang,” he told The Borneo Post recently.

Laing stressed that he supported Edmund’s stance of wanting to bring development to the area.

“Why would I object to the proposed perimeter survey which benefits all the residents of Long Terawan?” he questioned.

“These are false signatures. We knew nothing about it.”
