BETONG: Increasing the income of Betong residents through modern agriculture and other economic activities is now a top priority for Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

He expressed plans to achieve this vision together with the respective elected representatives from eight constituencies in the Betong Division through the Betong Division Development Agency (BDDA), the Department of Agrilculture Sarawak as well as other related agencies.

“The World Bank had recently recognized Sarawak as a high income region, but we must ensure our people too will have increased income.

“The target is for each household to be able to earn an income of RM6,000 per month by 2030,” he said when met by reporters here, on Monday.

To facilitate this, the Bukit Saban Assemblyman informed that the BDDA is setting aside a sum of RM265 million to implant various economic programmes in the eight areas under its jurisdiction.

These include constructing farm roads, strengthening modern farming activities, building up the food and handicraft industries, livestock rearing, and others.

“Some of us in the division, especially the oil palm and pepper farmers as well as marine fishermen are already high income earners, but we want more to join the rank.

“That is why the government has implemented various programmes and allocated substantial funds to finance them,” he added.

Meanwhile, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah handed over compensation totalling RM2.475 million to 100 landowners affected by the construction or upgrading of two road projects here.

The project are the Ulu Paku-Ulu Kota link Road and the Saka, Betong to Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Paku Central Road.

Joining him were Sarawak Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu, and Krian Assemblyman, Friday Belik. -UKASnews
